The Radium Dial Painters: Their Fatal Brush with Death

Behind the story of the clock and watch industries’ success, lies a tragic story of employee sacrifice. For a time, little was known about the toxic working conditions of the young women in the dial painting industry. Fortunately, their story was eventually heard. Unfortunately, many of them did not live to see that day. Colleen Nicastro, Director of Interpretation at the American Clock & Watch Museum, will present this story of opportunity, broken trust, and the search for truth. $5 museum members / $7 nonmembers

Before Brooklyn: The Heroes Unsung Who Helped Break Baseball’s Color Barrier

Before Brooklyn: The Unsung Heroes Who Helped Break Baseball’s Color Barrier
Tuesday, February 7 @ 6:30 PM
Online via Zoom
Sponsored by Bristol Public Library

In the April of 1945, exactly two years before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in major league baseball, liberal Boston City Councilman Izzy Muchnick persuaded the Red Sox to try out three black players in return for a favorable vote to allow the team to play on Sundays. The Red Sox got the councilman’s much-needed vote, but the tryout was a sham; the three players would get no closer to the major leagues. It was a lost battle in a war that was ultimately won by Robinson in 1947.

Ted Reinstein of WCBV-TV tells the story of the little-known heroes who fought segregation in baseball, from communist newspaper reporters to the Pullman car porters who saw to it that black newspapers espousing integration in professional sports reached the homes of blacks throughout the country. He also reminds us that the first black player in professional baseball was not Jackie Robinson but Moses Fleetwood Walker in 1884, and that for a time integrated teams were not that unusual. And then, as segregation throughout the country hardened, the exclusion of blacks in baseball quietly became the norm, and the battle for integration began anew.

Presented online via Zoom. no charge. Valid email required to register.

Bristol Interfaith Annual Thanksgiving Service

Bristol Interfaith Annual Thanksgiving Service
NOVEMBER 23 @ 7:30 PM

We will come together as a community of many faiths, joined in our gratitude for each other and for the blessings we share.

Guests from all of the greater Bristol community are invited to join with members of the Bristol Interfaith Coalition to celebrate their Interfaith Annual Thanksgiving Service in person at 7:30PM, Wednesday, November 23rd 2022 . The service is being held at the Prospect United Methodist Church, 99 Summer Street in Bristol. As in previous years, the diversity of Bristol’s faith based communities will be represented. Masks are encouraged, but not required. Facebook will live stream the service on the Prospect Methodist Church page, and the recording can be shared later.

In keeping with the theme of this year’s celebration, “Feeding our Neighbors”, monetary donations will be collected and made to Bristol’s “Brian’s Angels.” “Brian’s Angels” is dedicated to helping our local homeless and under served populations.

For information on the Thanksgiving Service, please visit the Bristol Interfaith Coalition’s Facebook page, or email BristolInterfaith@gmail.com. Brian’s Angel, Inc. information on donations can be found here. Additional contact for this event: Laura Minor, 860-978-1210
